Sarasota’s Future: Creating World-Class Institutions for Generations to Come

At the Tiger Bay luncheon on March 6th, the discussion centered on the exciting development of world-class institutions right here in Sarasota. Jennifer Rominiecki, A. G. Lafley, and Kevin Cooper each shared their vision for how institutions like Selby Gardens, The Bay, and Mote Marine will not only enhance our community but also become global leaders in culture, science, and sustainability.

When an anti-growth participant raised concerns, the speakers provided a powerful response, emphasizing the value of these institutions and the long-term benefits they bring. While growth does come with its challenges, they made it clear that the development of these world-class institutions — from environmental education to cultural enrichment — offers an undeniable return on investment for the community. The impact on Sarasota’s infrastructure is minimal compared to the lasting positive effects of these projects.

As Wayne Gretzky wisely said, “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.” By focusing on world-class institutions today, we are setting Sarasota up for a thriving future.

A. G. Lafley shared that his focus is on creating a lasting, positive impact for future generations and the development of these institutions serves as a catalyst for that vision. This isn’t about simply growing — it’s about smart, intentional growth that creates a foundation for Sarasota’s future.

Cooper said “Smart growth means thinking ahead, not just fixing today’s problems. Too often, we focus on short-term issues and ignore what’s coming down the road. Take Sarasota’s bridge situation – a 1970s study warned that having just one way on and off the islands would be a problem. Now, traffic backs up all the way to Longboat. If we’d addressed it sooner, it would have been easier and cheaper.”

This conversation was a great reminder that smart growth is essential for creating lasting value.
